Silent Nights, Please: The Holiday Gift New Yorkers Actually Want

City residents are making their holiday wishes loud and clear—or rather, quietly clear—for a change.

Forget gadgets, fancy clothes, or overpriced tech. The one thing everyone wants this year is a break from the relentless noise of sirens, break-ins, and the occasional rooftop helicopter getaway.

In a recent survey conducted by The Gateway Report, a resounding 98% of the 100 respondents said their dream gift is a little peace and quiet. The remaining 2%—clearly living under a rock—asked for smartwatches and laptops, blissfully unaware that their gifts would probably be “re-gifted” by local thieves before New Year’s.

What does this holiday fatigue mean for retailers? Jewelry stores, for one, are feeling the pinch. With constant “inventory reallocation efforts” by uninvited visitors in the Diamond District, shelves are emptier than usual. Mining companies are working overtime, but even they can’t keep pace with the mysteriously disappearing gold and gems.

Honestly, we get it. While the chaos keeps our newsroom alive, we’d also like to close out the year without a car alarm symphony or another rooftop chase making headlines.

Here’s hoping this holiday season comes with a side of hush. Stay safe, and may your gift exchanges be as uneventful as you’re hoping for.
